Seven miles northeast of Lubbock on US 62/82, Idalou is a small incorporated city with its own government and its own A-rated school district — a railroad and cotton-farming town since the 1910s that's close enough to make the Lubbock commute easy. Idalou grew up around a South Plains and Santa Fe Railway depot in the 1910s, took its name from the Bassett sisters — Ida and Lou — and incorporated as a city in 1925. It's been a cotton-farming center for northeast Lubbock County ever since, and its closeness to Lubbock, about seven miles down US 62/82, means it also serves as a base for people who work in the city. It runs on its own terms, with its own city hall, school district, and tax structure.
- It's its own city. A General Law city with its own mayor-and-council government and its own services — not a Lubbock neighborhood or suburb.
- Idalou ISD, A-rated. A small district headquartered in town, rated “A” by the state for 2024-25 — the school assignment still depends on the exact address.
- In-town and farm country. Homes range from established in-town lots to acreage and agricultural parcels on the county roads — very different purchases, and a big reason area price statistics can be misleading.

Idalou ISD's elementary, middle, and high schools share a campus in town. The district earned a state “A” rating for 2024-25, with a roughly 98.5% graduation rate and teacher experience well above the state average.
Idalou High competes as the Wildcats — a community Friday-night anchor with state basketball championships to its name, in 2010 and 2022.
As with any district, the specific campus and any boundary details should be confirmed with Idalou ISD for an exact address rather than assumed.

Town & community
Idalou keeps the essentials close: a city hall and post office on Main Street, a grocery store, a pharmacy, a few local shops and gift stores, banking, and an EMS, fire, and police presence. The Idalou Co-Op Gin still serves the area's cotton operations, a reminder of the farming economy the town was built on. City parks serve the community as well; confirm current facilities and any seasonal amenities with the city.
Getting to Lubbock
US 62/82 is Idalou's direct line into Lubbock — the same corridor that becomes the Marsha Sharp Freeway in the city. Downtown is about ten to twelve minutes away, and Texas Tech, the medical district, and the airport all fall within roughly ten to fifteen minutes, which is what makes the Idalou-to-Lubbock commute so manageable.
For motorsports fans, the Lubbock Dragway — a quarter-mile NHRA strip running since 1972 — sits on the county roads southeast of town.

Taxes: a city rate in the stack
A home inside Idalou is taxed by several entities together — the City of Idalou, Idalou ISD, Lubbock County, the Lubbock County Hospital District, and the High Plains Underground Water District. Because it carries a municipal city rate that unincorporated county property doesn't, the combined rate generally runs higher than a comparable home outside a city. That's a factual cost to budget for, not a knock on the town.
The city and the school district adopt new rates every year, so we don't quote a fixed figure — we confirm the current City of Idalou and Idalou ISD rates and pull a property-specific tax certificate from the Lubbock Central Appraisal District before you offer. Idalou's market is really two markets — established homes on in-town lots, and larger acreage and farm tracts on the surrounding county roads.
